World War One
When a young man enlisted or was drafted into the armed forces, he had to complete an attestation form similar to the one on the left.  These forms proved invaluable for providing information about the soldier.  But first it was necessary to known whose form to look up.  Fortunately there were several different sources which we used to compile a list of over 1000 young men from Tillsonburg and area who became part of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces that went to Europe in 1914-1919.
Today it is possible to research online through Library and Archives Canada and Veterans Affairs Canada providing you know their name or even just their serial number.  Service records will often accompany these attestation records.
The resulting binder entries at Annadale look like this.
